How to Commission a Work
Commissioning new music is one of the most important activities for music groups and organizations as this refreshes the repertory and encourages a viable and thriving art music culture in America. The following guidelines will be useful in getting a good idea of what is involved in commissioning a new piece of music for your group.
- Consider the length of work needed, accompaniment, level of difficulty, how much part division in choral music, date needed for first rehearsal, special dedication or inscription on the title page, and general affect or mood, i.e. joyful, somber, celebratory, mysterious, etc.
- Contact me by email
- After discussing details with me via email, we will draw up a contract. I will mail this with an invoice that includes the specifics of your new work such as relative length, date due, accompaniment, agreed fee, etc.
- Cost is based on the length of work and size of instrumentation, i.e. a cappella choral, accompanied choral, solo piano, and many other configurations of instruments and/or voices.
- Half of the fee should be paid before the project begins and the remainder paid on receipt of the commission.
- Time period for the completion of a shorter work is typically about 4 to 6 months.
- The base price for an unaccompanied choral work is $500 and $1000 for a large instrumental piece. Costs will vary for other miscellaneous instrumental combinations. Quite often more than one group will go in together on commissioning a piece and share the cost.
- It is the composer's decision if a work will be published or not and with which publisher. In the event that the commissioned work is published, the commissioning party('s) name is always included on the publication as well as any inscriptions or dedications requested by the commissioner.
